Everest Base Camp has been a popular destination for trekkers since the very first expeditions to the Nepalese side of Everest in 1953. Gokyo at 4,750m sits on the shores of Gokyo Cho, the largest lake in the area. These lakes are an important religious place for Hindus and Buddhists alike. The pilgrims visit the lake every year to take a holy dip in August. This side of the valley is quieter as the trail is not a busy as the Everest Base Camp one.
